Real Stories: Dental Implants Patient Reviews
C.C. Google Review
“I recently completed an implant procedure with Dr. Emery, and I would highly recommend him and his staff. The office is professional, his staff is friendly and well-trained, and Dr. Emery is very progressive in his techniques and protocols. He thoroughly explains what he will do and what you can expect. He creates models on a computer to achieve the best results for your implant. My daughter had her wisdom teeth taken out by Dr. Emery, and then, most recently, had a major jaw reconstruction by him, and the results were amazing.”
L.M. Google Review
“Dr. Emery is incredible. He’s changed my life. I’m congenitally missing my lateral incisors, and I had a very difficult case with gaps, but very tight spaces for implants–many said implants weren’t possible. I saw countless doctors and had failed surgeries before him. Dr. Emery made implants work for me. The technology he developed at his office enables extreme precision in complex implant cases like mine. That was back in 2012. I see him annually for check-ups, and everything is looking good. Definitely worth the money. He’s the best there is. I cannot speak highly enough. One of the best decisions I’ve made.”
W.T. Google Review
“Dr. Emery is a top-notch oral surgeon with an extraordinary staff. I saw Dr. Emery two years ago to discuss dental implants in my upper jaw. I accepted his proposed treatment plan of nine implants and two bone grafts. It was an excellent experience with little to no pain. I returned on August 13 for a check-up, and as I expected, all is well. I cannot thank Dr. Emery enough for his expertise and his staff for their professionalism and kindness.”

What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants offer a long-lasting, functional, and aesthetic solution for missing or damaged teeth. These medical devices are surgically implanted into the jaw to restore the patient’s ability to chew effectively, to improve the appearance of a damaged or otherwise flawed smile, and to prevent bone loss from missing teeth. Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth and support a healthy jaw structure.
Dental implants generally are composed of the following:
- Dental Implant Body: The dental implant body is surgically inserted deep through the gum and into the underlying jawbone, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration.
- Dental Implant Abutment: The dental implant abutment protrudes from the gums and allows crowns to be attached to the implant body.
Prosthetic or Artificial Tooth (Crown): The prosthetic or artificial tooth, called a crown, is attached to the abutment and replaces the original tooth. Other possible prosthetics include dental bridges and permanent dentures.
Benefits of Dental Implants
At Capital Center® for Surgery, our expert implantologists use some of the most sophisticated computer-assisted technology to make the dental implant process smoother, more comfortable, and more effective than manual methods. Here, there are even more benefits of dental implants, including:

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Dental Implants?
If you have missing teeth, ill-fitting dentures, bone loss, or damaged teeth, you might be a candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are essentially used to replace unhealthy, damaged, or missing teeth and function just like natural teeth. With our advanced X-Guide® computer technology, even more patients are candidates for treatment, as it provides better imaging and reduces certain risks, giving more patients the opportunity for this procedure. Ideal candidates for computer-assisted dental implants:
- Want functional, aesthetic, and safe replacements for natural teeth
- Are in relatively good health
- Have good bone density
- Are committed to the dental implant process and continuing good oral hygiene
The best way to learn if you are a candidate for advanced dental implant placements is to call Capital Center® for Surgery at (202) 386-7100 or complete the online form to schedule a consultation. Our implant experts will discuss the entire process with you and help you determine if this is the right procedure for you.
How Is the Dental Implant Procedure Performed?
The process of placing dental implants often takes several months to complete, as once the dental implant is placed in the gums, it needs time to “take root” through osseointegration, in which the bone fuses to the implant. The entire process is broken down into phases: consultation and imaging, bone grafting (if necessary), implant insertion, osseointegration, and, finally, crown placement.
Preparing For Your Dental Implant Procedure
Dental Implant Consultation
The first step is a consultation with one of our experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who will discuss treatment options and what you can expect throughout the process. They may review your dental history with you and briefly examine your teeth before moving on to the next steps.
Dental Implant Planning with Imaging
A key part of our process is high-definition, accurate dental imaging of your teeth and jaw using 3D cone beam CT scanning. Our team uses these images to view the entire jaw, including the underlying bone, to best plan the procedure and assess whether you need additional services, such as bone grafting. Additionally, these images are used to take digital impressions of your mouth, eliminating the need for physical molds that can be time-consuming and messy. These images take only a few seconds to acquire and are essential components of the process.
After discussing your current condition and showing you the dental implant plan, our team will schedule the next steps.
Bone Grafting
Some patients who have had missing teeth for many years or have lower bone density may require a preparatory step before the dental implant process. Bone grafting is a common prerequisite for dental implants, as it prepares the jawbone for implant integration. The process involves placing bone graft material into the area where a future implant will be placed and allowing the new bone to grow or graft in that location.
Once the bone graft is placed, it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the bone to mature.
What to Expect During Dental Implant Surgery
Step 1: Implant Placement
Using the images already taken and the computer-assisted technology, X-Guide®, your surgeon will place the implant. This technology allows your surgeon to see the entirety of your mouth and jawline, enabling them to see more than traditional surgery and reducing trauma to the gums and surrounding tissues. Additionally, using X-Guide® means the procedure requires smaller incisions and more accurate placement.
The entire placement procedure varies depending on the number of implants, but X-Guide® cuts surgical time in half compared to traditional free-hand methods.
Step 2: Implant Osseointegration
Once the implants are placed, you’ll need to wait another 3 to 6 months for the bone to graft onto the implant. This process ensures the implant post is firmly secured in the jawbone, providing a strong foundation for your new tooth.
Step 3: Crown Placement
Lastly, a crown or artificial tooth is placed on the abutment by your restorative dentist. If the abutment was not inserted at the time of the implant, it is placed before the crown in a separate appointment. The crown is created specifically for your mouth and the necessary spacing, resulting in a natural-looking, functional smile.
Dental Implant Recovery & Aftercare
Due to the minimally invasive nature of our process, recovery after dental implants is much faster and more comfortable than manual methods. Our process is so comfortable that many patients return to normal activities the day after surgery.
We will provide you with specific dental implant aftercare instructions, unique to each step of the process (bone grafting, implant placement, etc.), but some general guidelines include:
- Avoid crunchy, hard, or chewy foods
- Take all prescribed medications, including antibiotics
- Follow all recovery instructions
- Attend check-up appointments
What Results Can I Expect From My Dental Implants?
A strong, healthy, and beautiful smile is a mark of good health and quality of life; it’s also what you can expect with computer-assisted dental implant surgery. This procedure, while custom to the needs of the patient, results in a more complete, aesthetically pleasing, and functional smile. Patients are ecstatic to see the beautiful work our team achieves, and to live with a functioning, healthy smile.
Dental Implant FAQs
Why is missing a few teeth a problem?
It’s not uncommon to lose a tooth due to decay, injury, or other issues. The problem arises in the long run because teeth serve very specific functions for the health of the jaw, in addition to maintaining proper eating and speaking. The root of a tooth communicates to the body to continually repair the jawbone, because, just like all bones, the jawbone is in a continual process of degeneration and regeneration. If that tooth is removed and the root no longer signals that the jaw needs repair, it will degenerate, leading to bone loss.
This is why dentures aren’t usually ideal for long-term use: they rest on top of the gums and therefore do nothing to prevent bone degeneration. Dental implants, on the other hand, are placed in the bone and offer the same function that a natural root does. Additionally, missing one or more teeth can affect effective chewing, speaking, and aesthetics.
Do dental implants hurt?
At Capital Center® for Surgery, we take every step to make the dental implant process as pain-free, quick, and safe as possible. One way we do this is by offering a wide variety of anesthesia options (local, IV sedation, and general anesthesia), so our patients can receive the care they need with the appropriate medications. Additionally, we use a long-lasting local anesthetic called EXPAREL®, which significantly improves comfort immediately after surgery. As a result, our patients receive optimum, comfortable care without the need for narcotic medications.
