What Is Complex & Revision Dental Implant Surgery?

Revision dental implant surgery is necessary for patients who have received an ill-fitting or poorly placed implant in the past and are now facing issues. The main objective of this procedure is to fix, remove, or replace a failed implant to ensure long-term oral health and aesthetic improvement. Each case is different, depending on the patient’s needs, but it typically involves removing the failed or problematic implant, treating any surrounding infections or bone loss with grafting, and placing a new implant.

Complex dental implants are a little different: They are primary implant cases, not revisions. However, patients seeking complex dental implant treatments have been turned away from other oral surgeons due to the difficulty of their cases, some of which include severe bone loss, anatomical issues, or other factors.

Benefits of Complex & Revision Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants, whether revision, complex, or otherwise, are incredibly important for patients’ long-term oral health. The benefits of undergoing revision dental implant surgery include:

  • Resolving issues like infection, pain, or discomfort
  • Improving the function of bite, chewing, and speech
  • Enhancing aesthetics
  • Correcting bone loss for long-term jawbone health

In addition to the above, our team’s use of the X-Guide® system offers the following benefits:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • More precise implant placement
  • Reduced risk of needing subsequent procedures
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Faster surgical time

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Complex & Revision Dental Implants?

If you have missing or damaged teeth, but have been turned away by other oral surgeons or told you are not a candidate for dental implants, you are likely a candidate for complex dental implant surgery at Capital Center®. Many patients wonder how we are able to accept even the most complex cases, and that comes down to two things: First, we have extensive experience with complex cases and implantology; and second, we use cutting-edge technology like the X-Guide® system.

The X-Guide® system allows our surgeons to view the entire mouth and jawbone, beyond what traditional free-hand methods can provide. On top of that, computer-assisted implant surgery allows for more precise placement of implants than other methods, reducing surgical risks that likely took you out of other surgeons’ candidate pools.

Additionally, candidates for revision dental implants may be experiencing issues from prior implants, such as:

  • Persistent pain
  • Loosening of implants
  • Bone loss
  • Gum recession

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for complex or revision dental implant surgery is to call Capital Center® for Surgery at (202) 386-7100 or complete the contact form to schedule a consultation.

What Is Complex & Revision Dental Implant Surgery Like?

Dental Implant Consultation

Your consultation is essential in determining the right approach for your needs, especially in revision or complex cases. Dr. Emery will meet with you and ask about any symptoms you are experiencing, any prior implant surgeries, and your medical history. It’s important to note that each patient is different, and the surgical steps will vary depending on your needs.

Dental Implant Planning With Imaging

A key part of this process is a high-definition, accurate dental imaging of your teeth and jaw using 3D cone beam CT scanning. Once we have images of your entire jaw, including the underlying bone, we can better plan the procedure and assess next steps, including the extraction of the poorly inserted implant or bone grafting.

Bone Grafting

Many patients who need revision implants or have complex cases require bone grafting before the implant process. The process involves placing bone graft material into the site of the future implant and allowing new bone to grow to support it. This process can take several months.

Dental Implant Surgery

Step 1: Implant Placement

Using the 3D images of your mouth and jaw, your surgeon will prepare to place the implant in a precise position. The X-Guide® system allows your surgeon to see your whole mouth and the jawbone, ensuring greater accuracy and reduced surgical risks.

Step 2: Implant Osseointegration

Next, you’ll need to wait a few months to allow the bone to graft onto the new implant. This ensures a strong foundation for your new tooth.

Step 3: Crown Placement

Once the implant is securely integrated into your jawbone, you’ll return to your restorative dentist’s office to have your artificial tooth, called a crown, placed on the implant base. This is the final step; you will leave with a fully functional smile and bite!

Revision & Complex Dental Implant Recovery

The X-Guide® system is a minimally invasive alternative to freehand implant surgery, resulting in less trauma to the surrounding tissues, smaller incisions, and more precise placement. As such, our process is so comfortable that many patients return to normal activities the day after surgery.

We will provide you with specific aftercare instructions, as you may require more care due to the complexity of your case or other previous concerns with infection. Some general guidelines include the following:

  • Avoid crunchy, hard, or chewy foods.
  • Take all prescribed medications, including antibiotics.
  • Follow all recovery instructions.
  • Attend check-up appointments.
