What is Exparel?
How does it work?

Exparel is a long-acting local anesthetic medication used to manage pain following surgery. It contains bupivacaine, which is released gradually over an extended period to provide pain relief for up to 72 hours or more.

BENEFITS OF USING EXPAREL®

Prolonged Pain Relief

Exparel’s extended-release formulation allows for longer-lasting pain control compared to traditional local anesthetics, which usually wear off after a few hours.

Reduced need for Opioids

By providing effective pain relief, Exparel can help reduce the need for opioids after surgery. This is particularly important as opioid medications can lead to side effects, tolerance, dependence, and addiction.

Faster Recovery

By minimizing post-operative pain, Exparel can improve patient comfort and mobility, potentially leading to faster recovery times and an earlier return to normal activities.

Lower risk of Complications

Improved pain management with Exparel may lead to reduced stress and strain on the body, potentially lowering the risk of certain post-operative complications.

Facilitation of Outpatient Procedures

Exparel’s prolonged pain relief can be particularly beneficial for outpatient or ambulatory surgeries, where patients often return home shortly after the procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Exparel®?

To determine if you are a good candidate for Exparel®, you should consult with Dr. Emery or Dr. Retana at your consultation. They will consider your medical history, allergies, current medications, and the specific details of your surgery to make an informed decision about the most appropriate pain management strategy for you.

When discussing your options with your surgeons, be sure to mention any previous experiences with anesthesia or pain management medications, any known allergies or sensitivities, and any existing medical conditions you may have. This information will help us to tailor the pain management plan to best suit your individual needs.

Always follow the advice and recommendations of your healthcare provider, as they can provide the most appropriate guidance based on your unique medical situation.

Committed to our patient’s safety

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that in 2019, there were over 70,000 drug overdose deaths, with opioids being involved in the majority of these fatalities. This represented a record high for opioid-related deaths in the country. At Capital Center® we believe that offering an opioid-free pain medication is imperative.
